Stephen Broomer
Studio Immersion Program
Fall 2025
This fall, Stephen Broomer is serving as Pix Film’s archivist- and artist-in-residence. In his time at PIX FILM Broomer will be pursuing two projects: as archivist-in-residence, he will be working on a comprehensive catalogue of the works of the trailblazing Canadian animator John Straiton, with a focus on the 16mm and 8mm materials held by PIX FILM For his creative residency, Broomer will using the space to develop procedural models for a cycle of performance video works, revisiting his efforts in collective improvisation honed in videos such as Pepper’s Ghost (2013) and Carousel Study (2016).
Stephen Broomer is a major contributor to the history of Canadian experimental cinema, with six books and a dozen home video releases on the subject. As founder of Black Zero, a film collection and multimedia publishing house, Broomer has done much to advance the cause of experimental film and to build an international audience for Canadian experimental film. His own filmmaking has been presented at Anthology Film Archives, the Toronto International Film Festival, and the New York Film Festival, and has been the subject of an edited collection published by the Canadian Film Institute. Prior to his residency at PIX FILM, his most recent residency was at LightCone in Paris in spring 2025, where he completed his sixth feature-length 16mm experimental found footage film, The Star Rover.
